The Fruits of the Spirit vs. The Works of the Flesh

In the Bible, in the book of Galatians, there’s a special list called the “fruits of the Spirit.” These fruits show what happens in a person’s life when they follow Jesus closely. They’re like the beautiful flowers that grow in a garden when it’s taken care of with love and attention.

On the flip side, there are what the Bible calls “the works of the flesh.” These are things that show up in a person’s life when they’re not following Jesus closely. It’s like weeds in a garden – they can choke out the good stuff if we’re not careful.

3. Lustful Pleasures: This involves pursuing physical or sensual desires excessively, often at the expense of others or one’s own well-being. It can include indulging in excessive eating, drinking, or any other form of self-gratification that goes against God’s principles.

4. Idolatry: Idolatry is the worship of anything or anyone other than God. It can involve putting material possessions, relationships, or personal desires above God, thereby violating the commandment to love and worship Him alone.

They can lead to broken relationships, spiritual bondage, and separation from God if not repented of and overcome through the power of the Holy Spirit.

How to Overcome The Works of Flesh?

Overcoming the works of the flesh is a journey that requires intentional effort and reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit. Here are some steps to help one overcome the works of the flesh:

7. Build a Lifestyle of Deliverance: If you are unable to get delivered from a trusted leader, get connected to a ministry that teaches and conducts deliverance, this can be in person or online. Getting delivered is one thing but staying delivered is another ball game.

8. Regular Prayer and Fasting: Overcoming the works of the flesh is not always easy and may require perseverance and patience. When you fast and pray it crucifies your fleshy desires and appetites.

By taking these steps and relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, you can overcome the works of the flesh and experience freedom and victory in Christ. Remember that it’s a continual process of growth and transformation, and God is faithful to help you every step of the way.

How Prayer and Fasting Can Produce the Fruits of the Spirit

Prayer and fasting can be powerful spiritual disciplines that help overcome the works of the flesh in several ways:

1. Increased Spiritual Awareness: Prayer and fasting create an atmosphere of heightened spiritual sensitivity. When we abstain from food or certain activities and dedicate that time to prayer and seeking God’s presence, our spiritual senses become sharper, allowing us to discern and resist temptations more effectively.

2. Dependency on God: Fasting involves denying ourselves physically, which can help break the grip of fleshly desires and dependencies. As we abstain from food or other comforts, we learn to rely more fully on God for sustenance and strength. This reliance on God fosters a deeper intimacy with Him and strengthens our ability to resist the fleshly desires that often lead to sin.

3. Spiritual Warfare: Prayer and fasting are powerful weapons in spiritual warfare. By engaging in prayer and fasting, we engage in spiritual battle against the forces of darkness that seek to lead us astray. Fasting can break strongholds and spiritual bondage, enabling us to overcome the works of the flesh and walk in greater freedom and victory.

4. Repentance and Surrender: Prayer and fasting provide opportunities for self-examination, repentance, and surrender to God. As we spend focused time in prayer and fasting, we are prompted to examine our hearts and lives, confessing any sins or areas of disobedience to God. This act of repentance and surrender opens the door for God’s grace and transformation to work in our lives, enabling us to overcome the works of the flesh.

5. Clarity and Guidance: Prayer and fasting can bring clarity and direction from God. As we seek God’s face through prayer and fasting, He can reveal His will to us more clearly and provide guidance and wisdom for overcoming the works of the flesh. Fasting can help quiet the noise of the world and our own desires, allowing us to hear God’s voice more clearly and follow His leading.

Overall, prayer and fasting are powerful spiritual disciplines that can help believers overcome the works of the flesh by increasing spiritual awareness, fostering dependency on God, engaging in spiritual warfare, promoting repentance and surrender, and providing clarity and guidance from God. By incorporating prayer and fasting into our spiritual lives, we can experience greater victory over sin and walk in closer fellowship with God.

Exploring the Relationship Between Fruits of the Holy Spirit and Christian Virtues

The fruits of the Holy Spirit are intimately connected with Christian virtues, serving as manifestations of virtuous living empowered by the Holy Spirit. While virtues represent moral excellence and character traits cultivated through intentional effort and divine grace, the fruits of the Holy Spirit flow naturally from a life surrendered to God and guided by His Spirit.

How to Develop and Manifest the Fruits of the Holy Spirit

Developing and manifesting the fruits of the Holy Spirit in daily life requires intentional effort, spiritual discipline, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Here are some practical steps to cultivate and manifest these fruits:

1. Prayer: Cultivate a deep and intimate relationship with God through prayer, seeking His guidance and empowerment to live a life characterized by the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues is a great way to prayer.

2. Study: Immerse yourself in the Scriptures to gain a deeper understanding of God’s character and His desires for your life, allowing His Word to shape your thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

4. Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage, support, and hold you accountable in your journey toward spiritual growth and maturity.

Trials and Tribulations produce The Fruits of the Spirit

As hard as it may be to hear this, it’s through trials and tribulations that our character is built. And it’s usually in moments of pressure we are truly tested. It’s in these challenging situations that expose what’s inside of us and allow us to work on parts of ourselves where the fruits of the Holy Spirit are not evident.

Fruits Depend on Your Roots

Think about it, fruits are produced from a tree and trees have roots. The fruits you produce in your behavior when going through challenges will indicate what roots you have. So if you are cold and unforgiving you are showing signs of someone with a bitter root (bitterness). In order for the fruits of the Holy Spirit to manifest in you, you need to be rooted in the word of God. This means that you know you are accepted, loved and secure even if you were raised by a single mother or are being opposed by your loved ones because of your faith in Christ. You are rooted in God’s word regardless of your circumstances.

Championing the Fruits of the Spirit

Our greatest muscle to exercise is our heart, in fact, our heart is the only organ that is also a muscle. Which means we need to exercise it, not just through cardiovascular activity but also through addressing very deep uncomfortable issues.  Its our heart issues that need the word of God to heal, strengthen, and oxygenate us with the power of the Holy Spirit. This means doing a deep work on any areas of unforgiveness and rejection and work on moving from the orphan mentality to the sonship mentality. Take a deep dive into sonship in this post about getting set free from the orphan spirit. Being a champion in Christ takes discipline, so put in the reps on God’s word and keep going!

Biblical Examples

Here are a few examples of individuals in the Bible who demonstrated the fruits of the Spirit:

1. Joseph: Joseph, son of Jacob, demonstrated several fruits of the Spirit throughout his life. Despite facing betrayal and adversity, he showed patience, forgiveness, and self-control when he was sold into slavery by his brothers and later falsely accused and imprisoned in Egypt. His ability to forgive his brothers and reconcile with them demonstrates the fruits of love, kindness, and goodness (Genesis 37-50).

2. David: King David, despite his flaws, exhibited many of the fruits of the Spirit, including love, joy, and faithfulness. He expressed deep love and devotion to God through his psalms, rejoiced in God’s faithfulness and salvation, and remained faithful to God even in times of trial and temptation (Psalm 23; 51).

3. Ruth: Ruth, a Moabite woman, demonstrated remarkable loyalty, kindness, and faithfulness to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Despite facing hardships and uncertainty, Ruth remained committed to Naomi and embraced her God, saying, “Your people will be my people and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Her sacrificial love and devotion to Naomi exemplify the fruits of love, kindness, and faithfulness.

4. Mary, the Mother of Jesus: Mary, the mother of Jesus, exhibited faith, humility, and obedience to God’s will. When the angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God, Mary responded with faith and submission, saying, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38). Her willingness to trust God’s plan and surrender to His will demonstrates the fruits of faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

These biblical examples serve as inspiring models of individuals who demonstrated the fruits of the Spirit in their lives, regardless of their circumstances or background. Their stories encourage us to cultivate these same qualities in our own lives and to rely on the empowering work of the Holy Spirit to bear fruit that honors God and blesses others.
